The glass
What a Tesla windscreen usually carries
Before we quote a Tesla, we work out what is actually in the glass. On current Tesla models that usually means acoustic interlayer, very large single-piece screen and rain sensing by camera rather than a discrete sensor.
Behind the mirror sits a camera cluster mounted behind the glass ahead of the mirror, feeding Autopilot. The windscreen has to carry the right bracket and a clear optical zone in front of the lens, and the camera is recalibrated once the new glass is bonded in.
Tesla screens are large, heavily raked and bonded to a body that carries a lot of the load. Access and space on site matter more than on most cars.

Autopilot and why calibration matters
Autopilot reads the road through the windscreen, so replacing the glass moves the camera and the system has to be recalibrated rather than merely reconnected.
Tesla calls its driver-assistance package Autopilot. The part that concerns us is the camera behind the windscreen. It reads lane markings, the vehicle ahead and, on most systems, pedestrians, and it does that through the glass.
Take the old windscreen out and put a new one in, even a perfect fit, and the camera is no longer looking at the world from exactly the same angle. A few tenths of a degree at the glass becomes metres of error at a hundred metres down the road. That is why Autopilot needs recalibrating after a replacement rather than merely being reconnected.
Tesla builds tend to run the camera as part of a wider sensor set, so the calibration is not optional once the glass moves. We say at the quote whether yours needs it and what it adds.

Can you replace a Tesla windscreen at my home or work?
Yes, and that is how we do most Tesla jobs. We bring the glass, the urethane and the tools to the vehicle. We need room to open both front doors and somewhere reasonably sheltered if it is raining.
Does my Tesla need the camera recalibrated after a new windscreen?

What decides the price of a Tesla windscreen?

Can a chip in a Tesla windscreen be repaired instead?
